Hex 1-8: Digital Health & Wellness

Consider:

1-What are some possible physical issues that could happen because of technology?

2-Can you think of some "danger zones" at school or at home for physical issues?

What can you do about them (to avoid them, to fix them, etc.)?

3-What are some possible psychological problems that could happen because of technology?

Consider:  addiction, isolation, stress, depression, anxiety/social anxiety, sleep disorders, mental issues associated with cyberbullying, etc.

4-What can you do if you or someone you know is exhibiting some of these behaviors?

Video:  Internet Addiction

Choose an activity (if time allows):
1-Choose a partner and create a short scene where one person has any digital health and wellness issue and the other person is a friend trying to help them with their issue.  Show a positive way to help them and a negative way.  Act out for the class in a 2-3 minute skit.

2-Find an article or video that talks about physical, psychological, or emotional health and technology.  Write a summary of your article, including the important points (3-5 sentences), in the comment section of this post.

Possible topics/search terms include:  technology AND addiction, isolation, carpal tunnel, posture, eye strain, lack of exercise, etc.

3-Write a detailed plan to solve a digital health and wellness issue of someone in your life (you do not need to share names).  Options:  a plan to help them through addiction or isolation, a map/photos with a change to help with ergonomics, best items to buy to help with carpal tunnel or other ailments, etc.  Be specific!

  1. Eye strain has two causes one is to much technology use and the other is from long car rides. It can be annoying but harmless after long resting your eyes. While it can be harmless there can be an infection under the eye. Some symptoms are sore, tired, burning or itching eyes, watery or dry eyes, blurred or double vision, headache, sore neck, shoulders or back, increased sensitivity to light, difficulty concentrating, and feeling that you cannot keep your eyes open. Almost all the time though it is harmless.

  2. Technology can be the cause for some people not to get enough exercise. Some people get addicted to technology so they don't get enough exercise, sometimes they do not even get enough food. This can be a big problem when kids don't get enough exercise they can become obese when they get older. This problem can even make higher risks of health problems. Not getting enough exercise is a serious problem a lot of children have because they are addicted to technology.

  3. A lot of children today are obese because they don't get enough exercise. The average child spends up to seven hours doing something on the internet. That can cause lots of problems because then the child can sometimes not get enough exercise, they can miss out on what is happening around them if they are always on technology. If a child has too much screen time they can get obese. When kids are playing video games, watching T.V. , etc. they could be eating food which is why they could get obese. The children also lack in sleep if they are always on there technology which is not good either.

I found a video that said are you addicted to the internet. Basically what it talked about was how many people use the internet which is over a 1 billion people. It also talked about how that 70% of people use the internet everyday. Last it talked about the symptoms of using the computer to much like restlessness, moodiness and lying about internet use.

-An article I read said that people who use lab tops almost all the time can experience neck, back, and shoulder pain. It said that some people can experience pain in just one hour of being on a lab top.

  6. Lack of exercise is partially because parents don't make healthy lifestyles for their children. Their family time is watching TV. It can also be playing video games.

  7. The video I watched was about technology addiction. And I asked my parents what would you do if I take away all their tech. They said that they will ask it for it back within a 2 hours. I tried it I could barley make it out in a hour. And you might not know this but technology is part of our lives.
